Miroslav Srnkas writes an opera for Munich
Miroslav Srnka is composing the opera South Pole for the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich (Germany) and the premiere is due to take place on 31 January 2016. The opera in two parts with a libretto by Tom Holloway deals with the race which the Norwegian Amundsen and the Englishman Scott undertook to get to the South Pole first. Both reached their destination but only one survived. The Bayrische Staatsoper will set off on their “operatic expedition” with a world-class cast: the main roles will be sung by Rolando Villazón (Scott) and Thomas Hampson (Amundsen), Kirill Petrenko will be chief musical director and the staging will be in the hands of Hans Neuenfels. A blog (https://suedpol.staatsoper.de/startseite.html) will give up-to-date information on everything concerning this production.
