Handel in Karlsruhe and Vienna
The operas of George Frideric Handel are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. This year’s round of Handel festivals starts on 13 February 2016 at the Badische Staatstheater Karlsruhe with the rarely-performed Arminio in a new production by Max Emanuel Cencic, who also sings the title role. George Petrou directs the Greek period instrument ensemble Armonia Atenea. Just over a month later, on 18 March 2016, Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensemble perform Agrippina, Handel’s first resounding operatic success, at the Theater an der Wien. Robert Carsen is producer of this frivolous political thriller from the Roman Empire.
