Beethoven’s “Leonore 1806” influenced by Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Following Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s surprise announcement that he is giving up active conducting, his long-term assistant Steffan Gottfried is to take over conducting the concert performance of Beethoven’s Leonore 1806 on 17 January 2016 in the Theater an der Wien. Harnoncourt himself had worked on the version to be performed in the last weeks, but for reasons of age he is now handing over the baton to his star pupil. The gala concert celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Theater an der Wien as a new opera house for the Austrian capital features Juliane Banse, Michael Schade, Concentus Musicus Wien and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir.
